Pantone has announced the 2012 Color of the Year: Tangerine Tango

I couldn't be more excited. Maybe because I've been a fan of this sumptuous color in all of its tints tones and shades way before it was cool! I've been carrying my huge tangerine colored leather hand bag since 2004...it's all over our Creative Muse branding in soft shades and is the color of our window trim at the shop! Without planning it...today I'm just finishing up my lunch...a stuffed pepper...and you guessed it...it's a brilliant orange pepper! My bitty boy is wearing warm jammies today with orange robots...and there is a big bowl of juicy clementines on my counter! Yay for synergy! I'm claiming 2012 as the Year of Transformation...and what a better color to "paint" it with?

2011...what a year!

We were busy in the shop all year! I made it through Valentine's Day 14 weeks pregnant and still quite queasy...thanks to lots of help from friends and family. Weddings started early with events every weekend starting in late April.

We had a record wedding season with more than 30 events across the state, most of them in my final months of pregnancy...several of them in my first weeks postpartum. There is something about motherhood that gives a woman a good dose of invincibility!

Here are some of our favorites...as you can see purple was a hot color! What will the color for 2012 be? Well, I can say after a recent trip to Las Vegas that every where I turned designer window displays were dripping with royal blue! So...we'll see!

One of our favorite 2010 weddings was featured in the 2011 Fall/Winter edition of Vermont Vows! This same wedding along with a June 2011 wedding we helped with were featured on Style Me Pretty!

Will Alvery Marcotte was born on August 15th and is the apple of my eye! I am so grateful for extra helpers who made it possible for me to take a couple of weeks off and continue to have flexible hours throughout the end of the year to enjoy our new son! He is a miracle, and a daily joy. It's hard to imagine life without him. Not much else matters when you look into his beautiful blue eyes and get a big grin back!

He does like Daddy's shop better than Mommy's...but what little boy wouldn't? Welding, fabricating, airplanes, and boats...

What's new for 2012? Well our improved website at creativemusevt.com is in programming and will go live in early 2012. Our friends at Eternity Web are doing a great job taking our existing site and branding and making the new site much more dynamic...we think our customers will really appreciate the increased functionality!

Weddings are booking up and it looks like it will be another banner year with our first event coming up on January 28th. Most of all we look forward to serving our community, creating beauty, blessing others, and experiencing all of the new things life with a baby boy bring!

2012 promises to be an exciting year!

Summer Weddings Begin

June 4th kicked off our "Summer Wedding Season" with three unique functions. Enjoy a peek at the bridal bouquets courtesy of Greg Lamoureux.

Kim's wedding was an intimate affair on the Spirit of Ethan Allen. The weather was absolutely perfect for their evening cruise on Lake Champlain. Her "Classic Vintage" look included shades of white, ivory, butter cream and lavender. Her petite bouquet featured bouvardia, waxflower, hespres, freesia, and spray roses wrapped with a strand of pearls.

Jillian's wedding took place on the property of family friends in rural Franklin County. Her rustic alfresco event was bathed in shades of cream, white and bold purple...with lots of DIY details. Her bouquet featured lisianthus, mini calla lilies, hydrangea, scabiosa and roses.

Estelle's formal affair was classic with a contemporary twist. They were married at her family's church in Swanton with reception festivities following at The Old Lantern in Charlotte. White, butter cream, chocolate, and blue provided a fresh summer palette. Her bouquet featured hydrangea, roses, tulips, mini calla lilies, delphinium, and uhule fern curls.

Enchanted Woodland Wedding

Zach & Sieannda choose Stowe, Vermont as the location for their destination wedding and brought an intimate gathering of immediate family and close friends to Edson Hill Manor from Texas for their May 20th wedding. They wanted to create an "Enchanted Woodland" theme featuring soft spring green and pops of pastel hues. We decorated an arbor, lined an aisle of hay bales with lanterns and hung arrangements on trees throughout the ceremony site. Featured flowers included Juliet garden roses, spray roses, solomon's seal, scabiosa, dusty miller, freesia, ivy, astilbe, stock, waxflower, and bleeding heart.

Creating a Vision Board for your Wedding

Are you getting married in 2012? It's time to start planning! A "Vision Board" is a great place to start! As a certified Dale Carnegie trainer and coach I've spent a number of years working with professional clients. One powerful professional development tool we utilize is the development of a "vision." This "vivid mental image" helps give us a clear goal to work toward. I've found the same principle quite useful when it comes to wedding and event planning.

A Vision Board can be as simple or complex as you like! I recommend a size that's portable. An 8.5 X 11 or 11 X 17 inch piece of foam core board (available at any office supply store) is a good place to start.

Before you assemble your Vision Board you have to have a vision! If you're like most brides-to-be you have likely been collecting pieces of inspiration for a while and you can articulate to some degree the important elements of your special day. Get those elements on paper!

Ask yourself:

-What is the look and feel I'm going for?
-What are some words I would use to describe my wedding?
-What colors do I want to incorporate?
-What design elements do I want to incorporate?
-Is there must-have decor?
-Are there must-have flowers?
-What setting will my ceremony and reception be in?
-What time of year is the wedding?
-What natural, cultural, environmental, or other elements do I want to capitalize on?
-What sentimental or nostalgic elements do I want to pursue?
-Etc...

Next look at inspiration elements you've already collected and go to bridal magazines, websites, etc...and collect samples and pictures that capture the spirit of your brainstorming! Don't limit yourself to bridal publications. Maybe you're a winter sports enthusiast and you found some inspiration in a Burton Snowboard ad...or a great texture in a home decor catalog...or a swatch from your favorite skirt...or a design element from the cover of a book. If you already have fabric swatches from dresses, sample invitations, or DIY decor elements picked out be sure to incorporate those too. The sky is the limit!

Finally, combine your inspiration collection in any way you want (no rules!) on the foam core board. Permanent glue tape in a handy roll-out dispenser is the quick and easy way to assemble your Vision Board! Be creative...you never know, your Vision Board could go from handy planning tool to family keepsake!

Here's our EXAMPLE finished product. You can get a quick snapshot of this bride's vision: eco-friendly, ethereal, whimisical...you immediately see her eye for simplicity in lines and design with a nod toward the vintage.

Take your Vision Board with you when you visit vendors, go dress shopping, chat with your bridesmaids, etc...

Planning a wedding in 2011? Consider including tints, tones, and shades of this warm luscious pink! The floral possibilities are nearly endless. Some of our favorite pink choices include garden roses, peonies, ranunculus, nerine lilies, and waxflower.

No wedding in your future...that's okay..."Honeysuckle" will be popping up in fashion, accessories, and home decor too. So go out and do some trend setting!

AND...remember what is old is new again so don't be afraid to check out your closet or attic for all things pink!

Vintage Carnival

Vermont's Signature Boutique Bridal Event: The Vermont Wedding Affair was held at Shelburne Farms on November 6th. No surprise, Krista Washburn and the Vermont Vows staff outdid themselves with an event to remember! The Vintage Carnival themed event was filled with whimsical inspiration around ever corner. Gourmet candied apples, fluffy cotton candy, signature drinks, and a runway fashion show featuring gorgeous couture gowns were just some of the highlights of an evening showcasing Vermont's finest wedding professionals. We had a great evening reconnecting with friends and chatting with brides!

I've been on a color kick lately so when planning our table I chose a brilliant palette of crimson, gold and turquoise and rounded up some antique props from my attic collections including an old picture frame, a stack of books (circa 1800's), and a treasured turn-of-the-century militaria style medal from the Thos. D. Gard Company, Inc. given to me by a dear friend. Combined together with antique brass containers the look is what I would call "Old World Vintage Carnival."

This bridal bouquet features deep burgundy (nearly black) dahlias, red carnations, gold craspedia, crimson ranunculus, chili peppers,and magnolia leaves. We displayed it in a brass candle holder and finished it with gold wire details, a turquoise dupioni ribbon, and my favorite...the antique Thos. D. Gard medal! Photos by Greg Lamoureux

Our tip for your wedding decor planning: bring in some of your own treasures! Whether you're going for a vintage feel or just want to incorporate something special as a nod to tradition...there are so many unique options! Your grandmother's brooch fastened to your bouquet, and heirloom handkerchief tucked into the groom's pocket, an antique vase or vessel for the guest book table, an element of your mother's dress incorporated into yours. There are no rules...chat with your designer about ways to incorporate these special sentiments into your day!

Early October Weddings

The first weekend in October kept us busy with three events! Each wedding was unique and provided much opportunity for creative expression to reflect the personalities of each couple.

Joayn & Brian's wedding at The Barn at Boyden Farm in Cambridge featured a palette of claret and ivory with camouflage (to pay homage to the groom's dedication to the outdoors). Their flowers featured black magic roses, mango calla lilies, sarracina, and dahlias with freshly fallen leaves.

Chayah & Mike's wedding at the Lareau Farm Inn in Waitsfield was pure "ecclectic folk-art." Locally grown, organic botanicals included sunflowers, celosia, zinnias, ornamental grasses, asiastic lilies, kiss-me-over-the-garden-gate, sweet willliam, and hanging amaranthus, accented with solidago, safflower, bittersweet, agnois, hypericum, delphinium, and pussy willows. Other design elements included a collection of wild arrangments in antique Ball Mason jars and apothocary jars hung around the pavillion windows, and hand-crafted fabric bird mobiles that were suspended from beams.

Johanna & Bryan's wedding at The Ponds at Bolton Valley was vibrant and natural. They selected a delicious palette of "persimmon and wasabi." The orange and green was perfect for the sunny, peak foliage Sunday afternoon. Flowers included mokara orchids, dahlias, hypericum, anastasia chyrsanthamums, circus roses, hypericum and bittersweet. We wood-burned the couples intitials into wooden centerpiece containers that were mixed in with slender vases of mokara orchids and low centerpieces with metal lanterns so each table had a slightly different, yet unified personality. Tables were identified with Ben & Jerry's pint covers! How cute is that??

September 18th Weddings

This weekend's weddings couldn't have been more opposite...and yet both so beautiful at the same time. Enjoy some pictures...

We added fragrant waxflower to the mix for the centerpieces. Jill's reception was at the Montgomery House. Proprietor Deb Winders does an exceptional job of fine food and hospitality in this delightful Vermont Bed & Breakfast.

Same day, different look! Esha's vibrant palette featured the deep hues of autumn accented with purple. Imagine these bouquets against purple lapis dresses...gorgeous!

Bouquets were delivered in one of our fall signatures- vine wrapped mason jars that were later displayed on the head table.

Sweet Vintage

When my friend Jill approached me to do flowers for her simple wedding on September 18th I was delighted. I've known Jill for about 18 years and as Miss Vermont 1997 she inspired me to compete...without her prompting and support I wouldn't have the wonderful Miss America memories and network of friendships that I so treasure. Thanks, Jilly!

Jill's "Sweet Vintage" look combines fragrant roses including Garden varieties, Stock, and silvery Dusty Miller in a dreamy pastel palette, complete with lavish ribbons in shades of silvery green.

The day is slated to be PERFECT! Warmest wishes for a lifetime of happiness Jill, Jon & Ivy!

Keri & DJ's Wedding

What a beautiful wedding this weekend at Edson Hill Manor in Stowe. Despite the threat of Hurricane Earl...the day was beautiful...dotted with only a few rain drops.

Keri & DJ wanted an "earthy casual" look and choose simple decor with vibrant accents of color. Flowers included asiatic lilies, delphinium, buddleia, safflower, and iris.

We dotted the grounds with pumpkins and strung orange paper lanterns over the dance floor. The bride put a little DIY energy into the understated "centerpieces:" a single votive nestled in a pile of river rocks.

Love to snap a shot of the van packed up and ready to head out. This one was just too fun not to share! How 'bout that color?!

For my fellow Wedding Industry Friends...Protecting Yourself from Scams

This summer I started getting calls at the shop from TTY operators. TTY is an operator service for the hearing-impaired. The caller types their message and the operator reads it to you and then types back your response.

In this case the caller asks to speak with the manager or owner and asks for the price for 4 large arrangements for their brother's wedding. Colors should be bright summer colors and arrangements should be 24" wide and 36" tall and can be $200-300 each that will be picked up by a courier, delivered out of state paid for by credit card. [They provide lots of detail about the circumstances that makes it feel real.] Yesterday a call came in with a new request: 9 dozen roses arranged separately. Ultimately the caller will give you a credit card and ask you to charge an extra amount [usually around $1,000] and then wire that money via Western Union to the courier to cover their expenses. Of course this is a scam.

After talking with a friend at the Vermont State Police I learned that these types of scams are pervasive. The calls are originating overseas...usually Nigeria and are routed here. TTY technology means the callers don't actually have to speak...but simply type from a script that has been slightly tweaked to appear legitimate. The caller might say they live in a nearby town and they will use a stolen credit card and/or identity from a someone who lives locally.

In a test to see how far they would go I was able to get a credit card and personal information from the "caller." It belonged to a person who in fact lives in Addison County, Vermont. The phone number they provided was legitimate and fortunately I was able to speak with this person and alert her to the fact that someone was using her identity.

Just today a friend contacted me about an email she received...it's a similar scam targeting wedding planners. Click here to read more about it.

Unfortunately in this day and age we just have to keep a sharp eye out and trust our gut when something doesn't seem right. A quick Google search usually confirms a scam pretty quickly. Better to scope it out upfront before investing your valuable time and energy.

Some tips:

-Don't accept cashiers checks...or allow extra time for the check to be verified.

-Don't send money to vendors on behalf of someone you haven't met or talked with directly. Don't make payments without signed contracts.

-Don't wire money by Western Union to anyone you haven't met in person or know personally. Western Union has become a superhighway for moving drug and other crime related monies.

-Insist on secure payments.

You can report internet scams to the Internet Crime Complaint Center and contact your State Attorney General's office.

When a childhood friend contacted me over the winter to let me know he was getting married this summer I couldn't have been more thrilled to help in the conceptual design of the event.

Over the course of the last six months we connected long-distance (they live in Florida) about every detail from invitations to tents, cupcakes to centerpieces, location to ceremony and everything in between. In the end we ended really taking the role of artistic and creative director. What a treat to be able to take this special event from concept to reality.

Sam and Alissa's day was nothing short of perfect. The weather was pristine and the location idyllic...taking place on the fields behind one the groom's family farms. With the venue paying homage to the groom's childhood roots we took inspiration from the bride's heritage when planning the decor. Inspired by the festive colors and textures of the Bahamas and Turkey we used a palette of rich purple, saffron, fuchsia, and orange. Flowers included ornamental pineapples, mokara, dendrobium, and oncidium orchids, roses, craspedia and dahlias. Colored glass, Moraccan and paper lanterns added to the festive environment.

The unexpected hit of the day was our "Social Tent" which soon was dubbed "The Love Tent." It became the perfect setting for fun couples photos...here are a few of our favorites:

At dusk everyone gathered outside to light Sky Lanterns shipped from Thailand. The intriguingly beautiful paper lanterns took to the sky with the guests well wishes for the bride and groom.

Robyn & Shawn's Wedding in the Country

Congratulations, Robyn & Shawn...married just one hour as I post this entry!

Thoughtful is the word that first comes to mind when I think about this couple...hey they brought me a decadent strawberry shortcake from a local bakery the last time they came by the shop! Robyn & Shawn's simple palette of clover green and yellow was a perfect choice for their wedding at The Barn at Boyden Farm. Their arrangements and bouquets featured daises, gerbera daisies, hypericum berries, trachillium, and solidago.

We tucked mini green hydrangea, perfect little craspedia orbs, and buttery spray roses into Robyn's bouquet...pictured here on one of several pedal tractors at the Barn.

Custom details like escort cards, table numbers and a wishing tree added to the ambiance in the Barn.

Centerpieces were nestled in little galvanized buckets...a perfect accent to the beautiful wood interior. The groom made the escort card and table holders out of wine corks.

Despite a few sprinkles...what a perfect day! Congratulations Robyn & Shawn...I wish you a lifetime of happiness!

Creative Muse Featured in Vermont Vows

We were thrilled to find out that one of our favorite weddings would be featured in Vermont Vows.

The Fall/Winter 2010 edition is one of the best yet...of course I find myself saying that every time...but Krista and her staff really are making it a habit of outdoing themselves with each magazine!

So back to our feature...

Adam & Emily were married on September 12, 2009 at the Burlington Waterfront. Their "carnival inspired" wedding was one of the most fun and unique weddings we've ever had the pleasure of having creative participation in! The wedding featured bold colors, carnival-inspired food stations and entertainment, whimsical decor, and attention to detail beyond compare!

Barrie Fisher captured the evenings festivities expertly including this beautiful shot of Emily's bouquet [in our new ad] that we created with mokara orchids, roses, dahlias, craspedia, hypericum, ranunculus, and scabiosa. Details like magenta wire and lavish ribbons completed the look.

Emily and Adam surprised their guests with an air show immediately after their ceremony and Dan Marcotte of Dan Marcotte AirShows obliged with some barnstorming excitement in the Super AcroSport biplane over the waterfront.

Backyard Beauty...Ben & Eliza's Wedding

It's always a special honor to do flowers for great friends! Ben & Eliza's wedding was in two words "so them!" The family property is idyllic with rolling hills, fields, and stands of maples all bordered by the Missisquoi River. The backdrop: the Cold Hollow Mountains and Jay Peak. A woodworker by trade, Ben crafted rustic benches for the ceremony area...a mowed section at the top of the field, shaded by maples. The ceremony was performed by a childhood friend who received a "one day pass" from the State of Vermont to perform the ceremony. The simple ceremony was beautiful and was followed by an afternoon of great fellowship with friends including a barbecue, several exciting tournaments of badminton, bluegrass on the back porch and bonfire after the sun went down.

Eliza was the most relaxed bride I've ever met. When we talked about flowers a few months ago she gave me her blessing to "do whatever you want!"

Two large arrangements in sap buckets displayed on large tree stumps overflowed with locally grown flowers including sunflowers, crocosmia, mint, nigellia, wheat, millet, accented with roses. Eliza's bouquet featured locally grown dahlias, nigellia, crocosmia, and hanging amaranthus, accented with tiramisu spray roses. We wrapped the bouquet with a sentimental handkerchief given to the bride by her baby niece and secured it with her Aunt's gull pin. The day was nothing short of perfect! Congratulations Ben & Eliza...here's to a lifetime of happiness!

Friday "Date Night"

Friday night is "Date Night" at our house. If you don't observe a "Date Night" I recommend it! If your schedule is anything like mine you are busy, busy, busy with the demands of your career...then add family, community involvement, and the list goes on and on. "Date Night" is simply a scheduled night (or time) that gets put right into your calendar and like any meeting or commitment--you honor it! We have a familiar routine for Friday nights and it's still as special now as it was years ago. We have a favorite local restaurant that we go to. The waitresses know our "standard" order and we can usually confirm it with a nod. (It's Spinach Salad, no onions for me and the 158 Cheesburger with mashed potato for him...if you're interested!) An agenda-free night with your spouse, partner, significant other, or best friend is a breath of fresh air and gives you time to reconnect.

Experts say (and I agree) that "Date Nights" can have a positive impact on your health and well-being:

- Reduces stress = reduced blood pressure
- People live longer in good satisfying relationships
- Improves mood and decreases depression
- Keeps couples feeling young & vibrant

Even President Obama takes time for "Date Night" with his First Lady!

Whether "Date Night" is a regular event for you or you're scheduling it for the first time might I suggest flowers make it even more special! Even a single flower can be an endearing gesture of your love and appreciation.

Friday afternoons always bring a smile to my face here at the shop for all of the young (and young at heart) men who stop in for flowers on their way home!

A team of researchers explored the link between flowers and life satisfaction in a 10-month study of participants' behavioral and emotional responses to receiving flowers. The results show that flowers are a natural and healthful moderator of moods.

1. Flowers have an immediate impact on happiness. All study participants expressed "true" or "excited" smiles upon receiving flowers, demonstrating extraordinary delight and gratitude. This reaction was universal, occurring in all age groups.

Here are some quick tips to prolong your enjoyment of beautiful fresh flowers:

Daffodil Obsession!

I am unabashedly obsessed with DAFFODILS and have been for years! This time of year I start to yearn for the first signs of their green shoots poking up through the ground where I've planted bulbs en masse autumn after autumn after autumn. Maybe its because I'm an April baby and have always been head over heals in LOVE with SPRING as a rule. There is just something about the smell of mud and rotting leaves mixed with the bittersweet sharpness of a daffodil right under your nose that is somehow divine! Being able to bring daffodils in at the shop beginning in February is a treat and a tease...especially when winter promises to hang around for a while.

Species in the Narcissus genus have that familiar shape including a corona, the central "trumpet," and perianth, or the six floral leaves that surround it. Hundreds of wild and cultivated species include colors that range from yellow to gold, white, peach, salmon, and orange.

For your wordsmiths: (mostly for Angela) The word "daffodil" appears in English vocabulary in the 1500's. Prior to that the daffodil was call "affodyle" which means "cometh early." The Dutch word "de affodil," is said to be the origin term derived from the Greek "asphodel," the flower that bloomed over the meadows where the souls of the dead wandered.

For you historians: The ancient Greeks believed the Narcissus plant originated from vain "Narcissus" who died after becoming so obsessed with his own reflection in a pool that he simply could not leave. The gods supposedly turned his remains into the Narcissus flower. In ancient China there is a legend about a poor but good man who was brought many cups of gold and wealth by this flower. Summer Garden Wedding Inspiration

It's that time of year...weddings are being planned and couples are seeking inspiration at shows, in magazines, online...

Here's the next "look" we're excited to share with you...

"Chic Naturale" was the custom look we designed for Sarah & Joe for their August 23rd wedding in Woodstock, Vermont. Sarah & Joe share a love for the outdoors and wanted their wedding to have a natural simplicity about it while maintaining a certain chic elegance. The bride had her heart set on incorporating fresh blueberries to compliment their soft summer blue and celadon green palette. In addition to flowers, we tied everything together with three core design elements: birch, blueberries, and cobalt glass. Hydrangea, Lisianthus, Thistle, Delphinium, and the brides favorite Queen Anne's Lace provided the floral focal palette. Luscious blueberry wreaths donned the simple white columns at the front of the church and did double-duty at the Barnard Inn for the couple's "garden party" reception. Centerpieces included simple arrangements in both clear and cobalt vases elevated on birch risers, anchored with a mini basket of fresh blueberries and accented with creamy polished river rocks. Candles nestled in our handcrafted birch holders were grouped throughout the site along with cobalt votives. As a tribute to their Vermont roots the couple gave Pure Vermont Maple Syrup in maple leaf jars as favors. What could be sweeter?

Just thinking about Ashley & Trevor's February 14, 2009 wedding and thought I'd post some pictures to inspire all the brides out there looking for bold, yet romantic ideas.

Happy almost First Anniversary Ashley & Trevor!

Ashley had her heart set on a Valentine's Day wedding...how great that it fell on a Friday giving her guests a fun long-weekend celebration! Ashley's bold palette of hot pink, black and silver was pure bliss! We focused on a simple scheme of roses and gerbera daisies with accents of silver that connected every part of the decor from the festive candy bar to the cake made by the groom's mother, to the centerpieces, favors, and bridal party flowers. The ceremony and reception both took place at The Ponds at Bolton Valley in front of a blazing fireplace while sunlight beamed through brilliant icicles all around the front porch. Ashley & Trevor even braved the snow for some beautiful outdoor photos by photographer extraordinaire Kathleen Landwehrle!

Flowers to Beat the Winter Blues

Okay, perhaps it is a bit early for the winter blues to have really settled in, especially if you are a winter sports enthusiast! If you are feeling withdrawal from things green and growing here are some of my favorite floral combinations that are readily available. For maximum value ask your florist to hand-tie your flowers and wrap them up so that they are "pre-arranged" and ready to place in your favorite vase at home! Don't forget to follow your florist's care instructions that include recutting stems when you get home and filling your vase or container with warm water and floral preservative. Your florist should provide you with a 5 gram packet of Aquaplus or similar product which is both a fresh flower nutrient and water clarifier. If they don't, be sure to ask for it! Display your flowers away from heat sources and direct sunlight and change water frequently for optimum longevity!

Tulips, Waxflower, Seeded Eucalyptus. This combination is both fragrant and spring-like!

It's Time to Decorate the Tree!

Decorating Ideas for Your Tree

Some of you may have your tree up and decorated all ready. In my house growing up we brought in the tree the second weekend in December. And like so many traditions that are established in our childhood...I have carried that schedule into adulthood. So...my tree goes up next weekend. If you are looking for new inspiration for your tree, I've compiled some ideas here based both on personal experience and current trends.

The Designer Tree
Metallics are everywhere this year. Take advantage of the readily available decor in silver and gold and consider paring it with your favorite color. Here in the shop we're featuring a gold and lime green tree. Your local craft store will have bins of sparkly picks (feathers, ferns, leaves) at a great discount right now. For under $20 you can bring home all kinds of funky glittery and metallic accents to pick right into your tree. Complete the look with metallic bead garland and glass orbs. We added peacock feathers for a whimsical flair and finished the look with beautiful birds complete with glittery feathers. Also available at craft stores like "Michaels" these bird come with little spring clips attached so it's a breeze to add them to branches. Be sure to look through the decor you already have to find pieces you can include.

The Woodland Tree
Into more of a cottage or cabin look? Put nature center-stage! Our woodland tree at the shop this year is chock full of berry garlands and picks. Mix and match for a less formal looking tree. We recycled our harvest and fall decor by adding mini Indian corn and popcorn ears, gourds, birch branches, and dried quince slices. Dried lotus pods and artichokes are a great addition too. Think out of the box...we added in deer figurines to complete the woodland look. Distressed metal ornaments or anything featuring deer, moose, bears, and fish are perfect addition. Do you have birch trees on your property? Collect some birch bark and simply tuck it in around your tree! Raffia makes a unique and inexpensive garland for the woodland tree.

The Folk Art Tree
Create vintage appeal this year! The folk art tree is all about the use of found objects and the unexpected. One year I did this style by hanging old kitchen utensils and flatware from bits of raffia and vintage ribbons throughout the tree. A set of old tin cups, an old rusty hand blender, wooden butter molds, old wooden wash boards, and vintage Christmas cards are just a few ideas that make a tree like this a showpiece! In the shop we have a mini tree decorated in little folk art signs with quaint messages like "patience," "comfort", and "arrive." Primitive wooden hearts and stars are also a perfect addition. Are you a "collector?" Explore your collections of personal treasures for the Folk Art Tree.

The Comfort Tree
The economic climate is impacting all of us. A trend toward what is familiar and comfortable is certainly "in" this year! Do you have grown children? Go back and dig out those old ornaments you put away years ago...you know the ones...the homemade wreaths made out of jigsaw puzzle pieces, or the popsicle stick star, the finger-painted Santa, and the pine cone mice. Bring out the memories and make your tree all about family. Do you have young children or grandchildren? Why not set aside an afternoon or evening to make ornaments. Popcorn and cranberry or construction paper ring garlands are just plain old warm and cozy! While you have those old ornaments out consider wrapping one up and putting it under the tree for the grown child who made it. Some of the most sentimental and important ornaments on my tree at home and the ones from my childhood that my Mom packaged up for me as a special gift.

Poinsettia Pointers

Poinsettias are everywhere this time of year! Did you know that the beautiful plant we associate with Christmas is actually native to Mexico and Central America where it grows in wooded ravines and along rocky hillsides?

What we refer to as the poinsettia's "flowers" are actually colored bracts, or specialized leaves that surround the actual flower which is the tiny clutter of yellowbuds.

There is debate around the poisonous nature of the plants. The milky secretion found in the stems and leaves can certainly can be mildly irritating to humans and animals alike, but medical research has solidly disproved the old rumors that poinsettias are highly toxic if ingested by pets or people. The belief appears to stem to a 1919 report that two children of an US Army officer died after ingesting poinsettia leaves. The story was later determined to be hearsay.

"Contrary to popular belief, poinsettia plants aren't poisonous." Jay L. Hoecker, M.D. of the Mayo Clinic

It is amazing how rumors a hundred years old can become so solidly rooted as "fact."

Care for your poinsettia:

Place in moderate, indirect sunlight (6 hours per day)

Avoid placement near cool drafts or doorways...as well as heat sources like stoves or vents.

Keep temperature between 65-70 degrees

Avoid exposure to temperatures below 50 degrees

Water when soil feels dry to touch

Cover your poinsettia with a roomy plastic bag or wrap provided by your florist when transporting

Do not fertilize your poinsettia while it is in bloom

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

The American Cancer Society's most recent estimates for breast cancer in the United States are for 2009:

about 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women

about 62,280 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer).

about 40,170 women will die from breast cancer

All of us know someone whose life has been touched by cancer...probably most of us know a strong courageous woman (or man) who has battled breast cancer. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Creative Muse Floral Design is offering a beautiful custom vase arrangement we're calling "Tough Girl." A fresh look at funeral arrangements

We've had a busy week of funeral and memorial work. What an honor it is to help a family commemorate and celebrate the life of their loved one with fresh flowers and botanicals. Clearly, this inevitable life event is not a happy time and is something that most of us would rather not think about. The fact is at some point we'll all be in a position to deal with the passing of a loved one. The details can be overwhelming when plans need to be finalized in such a short period of time. When ordering flowers consider sharing with your florist some of the things that were most important to your loved one or friend. This week we created a beautiful "pie" in fresh flowers for a family whose mother was a well know baker of pies. Arranged in a ceramic pie dish we included a rolling pin all artfully displayed with deep red roses and apples. The family chose the arrangement to be showcased with their mother's photo at the wake because it represented her so well. For another family we selected a sap bucket filled with sunflowers, curly willow and other rustic branches for their loved one who was an avid outdoorsman. For such a deeply personal event there is no reason your flowers can't be personal as well.

It's Official!

Our closing was yesterday at 10AM. It's official! The Flower Patch at 261 Main Street in Enosburg Falls, VT is now Creative Muse Floral Design! With the timing of the holiday weekend it was convenient to close the shop for the long weekend to do some renovations. Thanks to the generous help of friends and family the basic remodeling will be done for Monday. The transition of the space and of our retail offerings will be a process that takes place gradullay throughout the summer so we can continue to be open to serve our customers. We hope you'll stop by and see us! Next step--new website goes live. We'll let you know when it is up and running...hopefully this weekend...thanks to FarmDog Studios!! Wedding Trends

I was asked recently about local wedding trends. If I could distill it all down to one word it would have to be "simplicity." Perhaps it is because we're all more sensitive about the ways we invest our financial resources. Whatever the motivation "simple" is in! Whether you are working with a $500 budget or a $5,000 budget "simplicity" can be achieved in a myriad of ways....and I personally love the creative challenge! For the brides I'm working with in 2009 simplicity includes elements like a cohesive theme, locally grown flowers and botanicals, arrangements that can be repurposed throughout the day, non-floral design elements like fresh fruit (think eatable centerpieces...a beautiful bowl of fresh strawberries, for example), and petite bouquets that are opulent and beautiful and at the same time put the focus on the bride herself.
